Tozan's 5 Stages Of The Spiritual Path
Jun 27, 2025“When you seek the grace of God, you can rest assured that the grace of God is also seeking you.”
~ Ramana Maharshi
This beautiful and profound quote from Ramana Maharshi reminds us that even though the spiritual path can be challenging, we can rest assured that we are supported through every step of the journey.
The spiritual path unfolds in increasingly deeper stages of depth, awakening, and support.
In this teaching, I explore “The 5 Stages of the Spiritual Path,” based on the ancient Zen Buddhist teaching of “The 5 Ranks of Tozan,” a teaching that offers both a spiritual map and a timeless way of understanding the unfolding of practice.
The five stages offer a way of looking at the movement of spiritual practice as it develops over time — from our initial encounter with awakening through increasingly subtle forms of realization and integration.
Rather than treating the stages as something to achieve, they can be understood as a map for recognizing where we are in the unfolding of practice and what the path may be revealing next.
The map is ancient. The practice is immediate.
What does this map reveal about your own spiritual path?
