WHEN PRACTICE DEEPENS

There comes a point when simply knowing how to meditate is no longer the whole question.

As practice develops, you begin to notice subtler patterns.

The mind becomes clearer in some places, yet strangely entangled in others. Old forms of grasping reveal themselves. Questions begin to arise about what is actually happening and where your practice is moving.

At this point, a map can help.

The 7 Stages of Purification is a six-month guided exploration of one of the classical maps of Vipassana meditation: the Seven Purifications.

Together, we will study these stages not simply as Buddhist theory, but as a framework for investigating your own experience, understanding how insight develops, and deepening your meditation practice.

SEEING MORE CLEARLY

Meditation becomes more than a way to calm the mind.

If we stay with practice long enough, we begin to see the mechanisms of the mind itself.

01

We begin with simple intentions

Most of us come to meditation wanting to become more present, less reactive, and more concentrated.

We may be looking for greater peace, clarity, or freedom from unnecessary suffering.

02

Then something deeper becomes visible

We begin to notice how experience becomes entangled with desire, how resistance appears, and how thoughts become identities.

We start seeing how quickly a sensation, thought, or fear can become me and mine.

03

Practice becomes investigation

Vipassana begins to move beyond technique.

It becomes an investigation into the processes through which grasping, identity, resistance, and suffering are constructed moment by moment.

And that investigation is the beginning of purification.

WHAT “PURIFICATION” MEANS

Purification is not about becoming someone else.

The word purification can easily be misunderstood.

It can sound as though something is fundamentally wrong with us and needs to be removed.

That is not how I want us to approach this work.

Meditation is not an attempt to manufacture an ideal spiritual identity. It is a gradual process of seeing more clearly what obscures the natural clarity of mind.

Through mindfulness, concentration, ethical practice, investigation, and direct seeing, we begin to recognize the habits of grasping and clinging that create confusion and suffering.

We do not have to fight these patterns. We have to see them.

Again and again. Clearly enough, directly enough, that the mind begins to understand for itself what creates suffering and what releases it.

This is one way of understanding the path of purification: a gradual clearing away of confusion and a deepening capacity to meet experience as it actually is.

A MAP FOR DEEPENING PRACTICE

The Seven Purifications present meditation as a progressive process.

They begin with the foundations of how we live and how we stabilize the mind, then move progressively into increasingly refined levels of insight and direct understanding.

Over six months, we will move through this map step by step.

Not to collect another set of Buddhist concepts, but to use the map to illuminate your practice.

The value of the map is not in knowing its stages intellectually. Its value is in helping us ask better questions about what is actually happening in meditation.

01

Where are you clear?

02

Where are you confused?

03

Where does doubt enter?

04

What happens when insight becomes stronger?

05

How do we distinguish genuine understanding from the experiences, interpretations, and attachments that can arise around meditation?

06

What does increasingly direct knowledge of experience actually mean?

The map gives us a way to investigate these questions together.

THE SIX-MONTH JOURNEY

Six modules. Seven purifications. One unfolding path.

Each month builds on the preceding stage, allowing enough time for teaching, meditation, investigation, questions, and integration.

MODULE ONE

Establishing the Ground

Purification of Conduct & Purification of Mind

We begin with the foundation. Before insight can deepen, there must be a sufficient degree of stability in how we live and how we practice.

We will explore the relationship between ethical alignment, mindfulness, concentration, and the collectedness of mind necessary for genuine investigation.

This first month establishes the ground for everything that follows.

MODULE TWO

Seeing Experience Clearly

Purification of View

What exactly are we experiencing when we say “I,” “me,” “my body,” or “my mind”? This stage begins a more penetrating investigation into experience itself.

We will explore the distinction between direct experience and the identities, interpretations, and assumptions we habitually place upon it.

What is actually happening here?

MODULE THREE

Seeing How Experience Happens

Purification by Overcoming Doubt

As practice becomes more refined, important questions emerge. What causes experience? What conditions it? What belongs to the path and what is simply another construction of the mind?

Rather than suppressing doubt, we learn to investigate deeply enough that certain kinds of uncertainty begin to resolve through direct experience of cause and effect.

The practice becomes increasingly grounded in direct seeing rather than belief.

MODULE FOUR

Discernment on the Path

Purification of What Is Path and Not-Path

Not every powerful meditation experience represents progress. Clarity, energy, unusual states, joy, tranquility, insight, and other experiences can all become objects of attachment.

This stage develops discernment. We begin learning to recognize what genuinely supports insight and what can subtly become another place for the mind to grasp.

The map becomes especially useful here.

MODULE FIVE

The Maturation of Insight

Purification by Knowledge and Vision of the Way

At this stage the path becomes increasingly experiential. Insight is no longer primarily something we understand conceptually.

The changing, unstable, and selfless nature of experience becomes progressively clearer through direct observation. Practice begins to develop its own momentum.

Our work during this month will be to understand this territory without forcing it, dramatizing it, or turning the map itself into another attachment.

MODULE SIX

Direct Knowing

Purification by Knowledge and Vision

The final purification points toward the maturation of insight. Here we will explore what the tradition means by direct knowledge and vision, how this relates to the culmination of the Vipassana path, and how the entire sequence of purification fits together.

Rather than treating this as an abstract spiritual achievement, we will remain grounded in practice.

What can be directly known? What releases grasping? And what does the path ultimately ask us to let go of?

AN IMPORTANT CAUTION

The map is not the territory.

Meditation maps can orient us, normalize difficult periods of practice, and give language to experiences that might otherwise be confusing.

01

A map can help you recognize patterns.

It can show that certain experiences are not random and that others have encountered similar territory before.

02

A map can also become another thing to grasp.

We can become preoccupied with questions like: What stage am I in? Should I be further along? Did that experience mean something?

03

The purpose is not spiritual scorekeeping.

The map exists to serve the practice. The practice does not exist to satisfy the map.

Our emphasis throughout these six months will remain on direct experience, careful investigation, patient practice, and intelligent discernment.

A good map reveals patterns and reduces confusion. But it should never become a replacement for experience, another place for grasping, or a new self to defend.

WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR

For meditators who are ready to work with practice more deeply and more deliberately.

The 7 Stages of Purification is designed for practitioners who want more than occasional inspiration.

It is for people who are willing to stay with practice over time, investigate their experience carefully, and use a traditional map as a support for direct seeing rather than as another belief system.

This is a six-month guided practice container, not a quick introductory meditation course.

This course may be a good fit if you:

  • Already have some meditation experience and want to deepen your understanding of Vipassana practice
  • Want a clear framework for understanding how practice can develop over time
  • Are willing to engage with sustained practice over six months rather than rush toward results
  • Value both traditional Buddhist maps and careful inquiry into your own direct experience
  • Want support through live teaching, meditation, Sangha, questions, and integration
  • Are interested in understanding not only what happens in meditation, but how insight matures

HOW THE SIX MONTHS WORK

A steady rhythm of teaching, practice, Sangha, and integration.

The course is designed to give each stage enough time to be studied, practiced, questioned, and integrated before moving on.

01

Live Teaching & Practice

Each module introduces the next stage of the map through live teaching, guided exploration, meditation, and practical inquiry.

02

Sangha Meet-ups

Regular Sangha gatherings create space to practice together, reflect on the material, and stay connected to the shared journey.

03

Monthly Q&A

Questions that emerge in practice can be brought into dedicated Q&A sessions, helping connect the traditional map with lived experience.

04

Time for Integration

The space between sessions matters. You will have time to work with each stage in your own practice before the course moves forward.

05

Integral Dojo Community

The course takes place within the wider Integral Dojo environment, giving you a place to stay connected to practice and community throughout the six months.

06

One Continuous Journey

The six modules are not separate workshops. Together, they form one progressive exploration of the Seven Purifications and the maturation of insight.

The point is not to move quickly through the map. It is to stay with each stage long enough for understanding to become experiential.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A few things to know before you join.

The 7 Stages of Purification is a six-month guided practice container. These questions cover the most important practical details.

Do I need to be an experienced meditator?

This course is best suited to people who already have some experience with mindfulness or Vipassana meditation.

You do not need to be an advanced practitioner, but the course assumes that you are willing to engage seriously with sustained meditation practice over six months.

How much time should I expect to commit?

The course is designed to support ongoing practice rather than create another demanding schedule.

You will get the most from it if you are able to maintain a regular meditation practice and participate in the live teaching, Sangha, and Q&A sessions as consistently as possible.

What if I cannot attend every live session?

Life happens. If you need to miss a session, you can continue working with the course material and rejoin the live process when you are able.

The most important thing is continuity of practice and engagement with the overall six-month journey.

Are the live sessions recorded?

Please check the course schedule and access details for the current cohort. If recordings are included, they will be available through your Integral Dojo account.

Is this mainly a study course or a meditation course?

It is both, but practice comes first.

The Seven Purifications provide the map. The purpose of the course is to use that map to deepen meditation, investigate experience directly, and better understand how insight develops in practice.

Do I need to be Buddhist?

No. The course draws from a classical Buddhist meditation map, but you do not need to adopt a particular religious identity or set of beliefs.

The emphasis is on practice, direct experience, and careful inquiry.

What happens if difficult experiences arise in meditation?

Difficult, confusing, or intense experiences can sometimes arise as practice deepens, and part of the value of working in a guided container is having a place to bring questions and receive context.

The course is not a substitute for medical or mental health care when that is needed.

What is included in the course?

The course includes six months of guided study and practice, six modules, exploration of the Seven Purifications, live teaching and meditation, Sangha meet-ups, monthly Q&A, and access to the Integral Dojo community.

What are the payment options?

You can join with a one-time payment of $347 or choose the payment plan of 3 monthly payments of $122.

YOUR GUIDE

Miles Kessler

Miles Kessler is a meditation teacher with more than 25 years of teaching experience and more than 25,000 hours of meditation practice.

His primary Vipassana training is in the Burmese Mahasi tradition, where his principal teachers include Sayadaw U Pandita and Vivekananda.

Miles is especially interested in the places where meditation moves beyond technique and becomes a direct investigation into the nature of experience itself.

In The 7 Stages of Purification, he draws on decades of practice and teaching to guide students through this classical Vipassana map as a living framework: how concentration develops, how insight matures, where confusion and attachment can arise, and how direct seeing becomes increasingly refined.

The aim is not to collect spiritual concepts or identify with a particular stage, but to use the map for what it is meant to do: support clearer seeing, wiser practice, and deeper freedom.

About Miles

THE PATH UNFOLDS

You don’t have to force the path.

We practice deliberately.

We cultivate mindfulness. We develop concentration. We investigate experience.

And yet the deepest insights cannot simply be manufactured through effort.

The Seven Purifications give us a map for understanding this unfolding process.

Over six months, we will study that map, practice with it, question it, and use it to look more carefully into our own experience.

Not so you can become obsessed with where you are on the path.

But so the map can help you become more intimate with the territory.

If this is where your practice is calling you, I invite you to join us.

See you in the deep end.
